January 5, 2012: This was our monthly Board Meeting. Details of that meeting may be found on the Club's blog at: http://uplandhostlions.blogspot.com

January 12th - Today was a special Meeting at Lion Archie's residence. 11 members were in attendance and Lion Archie was presented a Certificate commemorating his 56 year as a member of Upland Host Lions. The Club, also, informed Lion Archie that he has had his category of membership changed from "Regular Member" to "Life Time Member". Lion Archie has spent many years of service to Lions and his community, Upland. Those years of service have benefited all of us and the community he calls home. Lion Archie deserves all the recognition we can give him for this lifetime of service. One of the things we all remember is Archie's "Ole" stories. From time to time Archie will provide one of these stories for the monthly Bulletin.

January 19, 2012: During this meeting President Michael discussed member attendance. The LCI membership lists 31 members in our Club. Not counting our Honorary Members, we have at least five members who never attend our meetings. President Michael will contact these members and determine if they should be dropped from Club Membership. A letter will be sent to each of these individuals to determine their intentions regarding the Club.

It was announced that our Club's Student Speaker Contest will be held on February 13, at 6:00PM, at Cable Airport. Since our meeting, it has been confirmed that we will have 3 student speakers this year and last years winner is back among them.

Today our program Chair person was Lion Madeleine and she had arranged for Ms. Sarah Keeney to speak to us about a pilgrimage she recently participated in.. Ms. Keeney participated in the Pilgrims of Saint James walk on the Camino de Santiago, in Spain. This walk is 500 miles in length and took them 37 days. The "Pilgrims" walked 13-18 miles per day and stayed overnight at hostiles that provided shelter and food along the way, exclusively, for Pilgrims on the Saint James walk. This walk is not just on flat ground . Ms. Keeney stated that the first day started at 400 feet above sea level and 15 miles later ended at 4,700 feet above sea level. She shared many beautiful pictures of the countryside and local terrain with us and told us of her experiences in the hostels, which were very good. The Pilgrims of Saint James walk was started in 1901 by a pastor and has had many, many participants since that time.
Requests for Donations: This is not a request for a monetary donation but a vote donation. Lion Amanda Behnke works for the San Gabriel Childrens Center and they are in the running to receive $10,000 from IKEA. It (the Children's Center) is, evidently, one of several organizations being considered for this donation and the public is being asked to vote about who should get it. Lion Amanda has asked that we all vote for the Children's Center.
Details of this meeting may be found on the Club's blog at: http://uplandhostlions.blogspot.com/.

December 15th - President Michael reported on the Cucamonga Health Fair which was held on Saturday December 3. He said they gave 68 hearing tests and 748 eye exams. The Upland Christmas Parade was also held on December 3, with Lion Ken M. as the Parade co-chairman. This years Parade was well attended and probably the best organized in years.

President Michael reported on our annual Christmas party which was held at Maniac Mike's Restaurant. The party was well attended and everyone had a good time. The Club made $233.00 for our Administrative Fund.

The Club has received raffle tickets from Terrisita Pines Scout Camp and from the LCI Youth Exchange Foundation, for their fund raisers. Each of them sent tickets to be sold for $5.00 each.

Lion Charlotte was our program chairperson for the day and she introduced Mr. Anthony J. Portantino, State Assemblyman, as our speaker. Mr. Portantino, a Democrat basically took his party to task for the way the State Budget was handled this year. The Assembly was not given the Budget for review prior to being asked to vote on it. The second go around was the same, no review and they were forced to vote on it. He said the Democrats had "cooked the books". He briefly described how the budget was split between the majority and minority parties. He also told us how his party (the Democrats) had shunned him and cut his staff's budget after he refused to go along with them on the State Budget. He talked further about an umbilical cord registry, transparency in government and whistle blower legislation (which the legislators wanted to exempt themselves from). Mr. Portantino explained to us, in some detail, the redistricting and its effect on Upland and the surrounding area.

November 3rd - This was our monthly Board Meeting. Details of this meeting may be found on the Clubs blog at: http://uplandhostlions.blogspot.com/

November 17th - We did not have a program today so we spent the time talking about other Club activities.

First, and quite significant, this month we provided eye exams and glasses for 13 Upland School Students. Fortunately we have a good organization working with us and they provide the examination and new glasses for $50.00 per child. 13 exams and glasses only cost us $650.00.

Next, and also very important, we discussed the LCI tree planting program. Our newest member, Lion Wendy, alerted us to a program started in 1941 called the "Penny Pines Reforestation Program". The first Penny Pines Plantation was sponsored by a San Francisco Women's Association to restore areas damaged by forest fires. Since that beginning in 1941 many groups and individuals have been added each year. In the beginning pine seedlings could be purchased for 1cent each and 680 seedlings would reseed an acre. A $68.00 donation would reseed 10 acres (6,800 new trees). Our Club voted to donate $68.00 to reseed 10 acres of forest.

The Club committed to providing complete Thanksgiving Dinners for needy families in the Upland area. During this meeting the plans were finalized to prepare and deliver complete dinners for these families. On Friday November 18th we met at Cable Airport to pack all the fixing's necessary for 12 families to have a complete dinner. The pictures below show our Club members filling bags of food to provide everything for these 12 families. This food was taken to Lion (Pastor) Glenn's church for distribution.
This was noted in the local newspaper as "In the first test of the new policy, Fillipi proposed that gadfly Hal Tanner's complaints be sent to the Advisory Committee for review." Congratulations Hal they have finally acknowledged you.

President Michael announced that our Club had received the Sight and Hearing Patch to be placed on our Club Banner. This patch is for our donation to LCI Sight and Hearing program.

Our Club was the only local service Club in attendance at the annual Upland Interfaith Prayer Breakfast. We had 7 members in attendance - good going Club.

As is our Club's annual tradition we will donate 10 turkeys and all the fixings to needy families in the City of Upland. Club members will bring food for the food baskets to our next meeting on November 17. We will work with Foothill Family Shelter to distribute these baskets.

LCI has made it a goal for Lions International to plant millions of trees this year. To support this effort Lion Sang has planted 5 trees and Lion Jim T. supervised the Reno Spanish Springs Club tree planting effort. Lion Wendy has paid for two plantation plantings by the National Forest Service. Plantation planting by the Forest Service consist of planting seedlings on 1/2 acre of forest service land that has been defoliated by fire. For each $68.00 donation the Forest Service will replant 1/2 acre. Lion Wendy has donated $136.00 for two plantations. It is anticipated that our Club will donate for a plantation.

New Business: First, and most important, new business today was the induction of a new member. President Michael conducted the induction of Lion Wendy Jarvis as the newest member of The Upland Host Lions Club. Welcome Lion Wendy and we know our Club will better serve our community and charities with you as a member.
The meeting started with introduction of the Governors Cabinet. President Michael introduced Region Chairman Gil Smith who in turn introduced District Governor Ken Sherwood. Governor Ken has been a Lion for 29 years (perfect attendance)and held most all Club offices and continued to serve the district on the cabinet for 16 years in 18 offices. He has received many awards and medals for his activities and devotion to Lions. Ken's goals as Governor are to protect and enhance the environment with clean-up projects, tree planting and increasing the quantity and quality of membership. He talked to us about his attendance at the International convention in Seattle. He had a discussion with International President Tam who set a goal for Lions to plant 1 million trees this year. President Tam suggested that Governor Ken's goal should be to replant "Sherwood Forest". They also discussed other conservation efforts in the areas of water, gasoline and recycling. Governor Ken informed us that his acronym is "CRAP" short for Conservation, Recycling And Planting.

Governor Ken introduced 1st Vice District Governor P.J. Smith (PJ). PJ's focus this year is on membership. his main efforts will go into MERLO, Global Membership Teams and District/Club Membership efforts.

1st Vice District Governor PJ introduced 2nd Vice District Governor Sheila Casteel. Sheila talked to us about the Rose Parade Float and the importance of maintaining the Lions float in the parade. The float is seen by 400 million people each year. Each float is in the parade by invitation only. If we drop out it will not get back in. The theme of this years float is "World Peace". The cost of the float has, in the past, been covered by California Lions Clubs. LCI now participates in the cost of the float. It is very expensive and funds are raised in many ways. In addition to President Tam and his wife there are a 4 seats available on the float and each one is awarded with a $5,000 donation. All districts are requested to donate and funds are raised through the sale of items such as pins, shirts, hats and patches. The Rose Float Patch sells for $200 each.

At the close of the meeting President Michael presented an extraordinary Lions Vest, covered with Lion Pins to Governor Ken. The vest had belonged to Lion Gene Bello (deceased). In addition to the vest he gave Governor Ken a bag full of Lions pins which had been collected by Lion Gene over the years. Governor Ken is the King of Lions pin swappers.

Other Club Members in Attendance: Lions Beverly, Ken B. and Wendy

Secretary's Report: The September, 2011 Secretary's Board Meeting Minutes were provided on the Club's blog for all members to review, A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the September Board Meeting Minutes as presented.

Treasurers Report: Treasurer Lion Ken presented the current financial report for the Clubs information. The current status is as follows:
Admin. Fund: Sept. 1, 2011 - $ 317.22 Oct. 5, 2011 - $ 607.00
Activity Fund: Sept. 1, 2011 - $8953.66 Oct. 5, 2011 - $7158.52

The Treasurer's report was accepted as presented.

Old Business: President Michael Reviewed the Club's Finances. Unless the Club Members can come up with some fund raisers, that we all participate in, we are in financial trouble. On almost every meeting we have had, with a meal, we lost money. For the year our payments for breakfast left us $114.73 in the hole. After all our monetary items such as the raffle, tail twisting, dues, fund raising and payment of the LCIF, MD4 and District dues plus supplies and miscellaneous (including the breakfast loss) our Administrative fund is -$231.07. The one other fund raiser we have had is the calendar raffle sales. We committed for our Club to buy (and sell) 125 calendars which were to be sold for $10.00 each ($1250.00). If we had sold all the calendars the Club would have made $625.00. Our members have sold 82. This means the Club is holding the bag for $430.00. With our finances, this loss in the Administrative fund will be hard to make up. The Club desperately needs to come up with Administrative Fund fund raisers. Members need to come up with suggestions for these fund raisers and fully support them.

New Business: Everyone was encouraged to attend the Cabinet Meeting on November 5. It is to be held at the Pomona Valley Mining Company.

In Line with our need for fund raisers we had a speaker today. Ms. Sherry Ruffin, fund raising representative for Total Resources Intl. spoke to us about using emergency survival kits as a method of raising funds for our Club. Her company has 13 different kits which can offer assistance with most any kind of emergency. These kits are designed for home, office, school, outdoors, sports, auto and travel situations. Depending on the type kit the Club could receive 30 to 50 percent of the items sales price for our needy fund. Ms. Ruffin left information with us regarding the program and how to get started.

Ms. Sherry Ruffin

Lion Ken M. Informed the Club that Upland Host Lions has been asked to coordinate this years Upland Christmas Parade. This means we will have a broad responsibility for planning and implementing the success of the parade.

On October 1st Lion Ken Myers is leading a diabetic walk fund raiser at Knotts Berry Farm and he requested help in keeping it organized. The walk is on Saturday, October 1st and the volunteers need to be at Knott's by 5:00 AM.

It is time, once again, for the annual Calendar Fund raiser and President Michael has the Calendars for everyone to pick up and sell.

Our program Chairman today was Lion Joe Glick. Joe has a lifetime involvement with the Boy Scouts of America and his speaker for today has also had a lifetime commitment to the Boy Scout movement. Our speaker today was Mr. Kevin Shaughnessy. Mr. Shaughnessy is an Eagle Scout (as is Lion Joe). Mr Shaughnessy has devoted the past 52 years to involvement with the Boy Scout Program. He was a career military serviceman and served in Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Mr. Shaughnessy told us about Scouting and how it got started. The Boy Scout movement was started in England in 1907. In 1910 American business man, W. D. Boyce an American publisher was in England and was helped in finding his way around by a Boy Scout. He was so impressed that when he came home he started the Scout movement in the United States. The goals of Scouting is to help young men to develop by teaching responsibility, citizenship and reverence for God.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank a Scout can attain and must be accomplished by the time he is 18 years of age. Mr. Shaughnessy told us of the many notable men who have attained the rank of Eagle Scout. President Gerald Ford was an Eagle Scout and Mr. Shaugnessy related that he had personal friend who worked in the White House and he felt Gerald Ford was the most honest man he had ever met. Neal Armstrong and 10 of the Astronauts who walk on the moon were all Eagle Scouts. many, many notable people were in Scouts and many of the attained the rak of Eagle Scout. For every 100 Scouts only 2 made Eagle Scout.

Mr. Shaughnessy and most Scouts live by the Scout oath and Scout Law. Scouting has a major influence in giving individuals direction, values and leadership skills.
This fund raiser will be pursued further.
